NC School Nutrition and Fitness Resources
Eat Smart, Move More NC: Statewide initiative that promotes increased opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating through policy and environmental change. Provides resources for schools, communities, health care providers, and worksites as well as links to the Eat Smart: NC’s Nutrition Recommended Standards for Foods Available in Schools and Move More: NC’s Recommended Standards for Physical Activity in Schools.
Be Active, NC: Statewide non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the physical activity levels and healthy lifestyles of all North Carolinians through people, programs and policies. Provides resources for incorporating more physical activity during the school day, such as Energizers, pedometers, and classroom curricula.
NC Healthy Schools: Department of Public Instruction initiative that focuses on improving the health of students and staff by providing coordination and resources in eight different areas of school health. Provides resources for creating a Coordinated School Health Program and a School Health Advisory Council.
Fit Kids: Designed to assist teachers and school administrators in meeting the Healthy Active Children policy. Provides curriculum-supporting classroom activities developed by teachers for teachers, as well as resources and tips for PE, recess and intramurals.
Fit Together: Links North Carolinians with tools for maintaining healthy lifestyles. Provides resources for families, communities, and worksites.
Drive to Fitness: Incentive-based program that awards fitness and health behaviors among youth. Primarily for children, teachers and parents affiliated with elementary and middle schools in North Carolina.
ncpe4me.com: Current information about Health Education, Physical Education, athletics, and sports medicine in NC. Provides resources for teachers, parents and students.
NC Prevention Partners: Statewide non-profit organization dedicated to building effective prevention systems in NC communities and health systems in order to improve health of all North Carolinians. Provides resources for nutrition and health in schools.

Data Sources
School Health Index Needs Assessment: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention health assessment and planning tool for schools. The tool assesses the eight different areas of coordinated school health and can be used to identify health areas in your school needing improvement. Provides valuable information for grant-writing purposes.
Overweight and Obesity: Childhood Overweight: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention overview of the prevalence of overweight children, contributing factors, and consequences.
NC Physical Activity and Nutrition Data Resources: Comprehensive Eat Smart, Move More NC list of data sources available in NC. Provides information about the prevalence of overweight children in NC as well as information about risk behaviors among NC youth.

Coordinated School Health Model: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guide to understanding the model and all eight components.
Guide to Developing an Evaluation Plan: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guide to evaluating health programs. Provides resources, steps, and standards for conducting program evaluation.
Center for Science in the Public Interest: Non-profit advocacy group that advocates for nutrition and health, food safety, and sound science. Provides numerous resources for increasing physical activity at school and improving school foods, including a toolkit with examples of school districts that have made successful healthy changes. Action for Healthy Kids: Non-profit organization formed specifically to address the epidemic of overweight, undernourished and sedentary youth by focusing on changes at school. Provides resources to improve the school nutrition and physical activity environment.
