Wake to Wellness Grants Program, 2007-2010

Wake to Wellness News

The John Rex Endowment and the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention are pleased to announce that fifteen Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) elementary schools have been selected for funding as part of the Wake to Wellness Program!

Beginning in the 2007-2008 school year, these elementary schools will receive a total of $450,000 (up to $30,000 per school over three years) from the John Rex Endowment to implement nutrition and fitness programs. The competitive grant process began early 2007 with a request for grant proposals that support the development of school-based programs that create healthier school environments.

The 15 Wake to Wellness schools will implement projects that help meet the requirements of the WCPSS Wellness Policy (#5125) and the Healthy Active Children Policy of the North Carolina State Board of Education. Schools have designed programs that focus on nutrition, physical education, recess and physical activity. A summary of awarded programs can be found on the Funded Schools 2007 page.

About Wake to Wellness

The purpose of the Wake to Wellness Grants Program is to provide funding to Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) elementary schools to implement programs that help meet one or more nutrition and/or physical activity requirements of state, district, and local school wellness policies. These grants support public schools in their efforts to develop programs that create healthier school environments.

Funding for this program comes from the John Rex Endowment. The Endowment supports visible and measurable improvements in the health of children and youth by improving access to health services, by promoting healthy behaviors and by providing opportunities for growth and development. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention is responsible for the administration of these grants funds.
